Mahi Mahi - BUMPSON
Intake: August 3, 2025
Found: Rehoboth Beach, Delaware — tangled in a volleyball net.
Condition on arrival: Fair. Netting marks. Grey. We had no idea what we had.
Temperament: Odd-looking. Odder to be around. Desperate, in the nicest possible way, to belong to somebody.
Light: Bright, warm. It brings the colours up.
Attention: High — Bumpson wants to be included in things and does poorly on his own.
Good with children: Excellent.
Good with other residents: Yes. This is the whole point of Bumpson.
Requirements: A social room and, ideally, company on the wall. He is not a solo resident and never has been.
Hook: “He came in grey. Nobody expected this.”
Bumpson spent an unknown period tangled in a volleyball net at Rehoboth and appears to have enjoyed himself throughout. He arrived grey, unremarkable, and easy to walk past.
Then the rehabilitation got underway and the colours started coming up — not one colour, all of them, in an arrangement no one here can account for. He now looks like several different fish who have agreed to travel together. He is odd. He behaves oddly. We would not change a thing.
What he wants, more than the light or the wall or any of it, is to be part of a group. Hang him on his own and he’s fine, and you’ll feel bad about it. Hang him with one or two others in a room people actually use and he is the happiest resident we have.
