Condition on arrival: Good. Slightly damp, deeply unbothered.

Temperament: Alarming to look at. Not alarming in any other respect. The gentlest resident we have.

Light: Any. He’s not fussy and it’s a relief.

Attention: Moderate. Happy alone, delighted when you’re back.

Good with children: Excellent — though give them a minute with him first.

Good with other residents: Yes, with everyone, without exception.

Requirements: A wall people will actually walk up to. He needs the chance to change their minds.

Hook: “Everybody is frightened of him for about ten seconds.”

A woman on Sanibel had been shelling for two hours, looked into her bucket, and found Blinker in it. Her reaction was, we’re told, considerable. He does look alarming — that’s the first thing anyone says about him, and it’s the reason he was passed over eleven times before somebody stood still long enough to notice he isn’t. He is the gentlest resident in this building. He is good with absolutely everyone. Hang him somewhere people will get close to him, because ten seconds is all it takes and then they’re his.
