Found: Folly Beach, South Carolina — three days after the storm, all three together.

Condition on arrival: Poor. Skelly waterlogged and cracked along one side. The two small ones untouched, which we have never fully explained.

Temperament: Standoffish. Has teeth and is entirely aware of it. Holds a firm and long-standing belief that the other two are food.

Light: Afternoon light.

Attention: Low — but he notices more than he lets on, particularly where the small ones are.

Good with children: Yes, above toddler height.

Good with other residents: Only these two. Supervised. We are being sincere.

Requirements: Adopted as a trio, non-negotiable. Not near a door — he doesn’t care for the movement. Hang the small ones on the same wall but with some distance, not because anything will happen, but because he would rather you didn’t test it.

Hook: “He came in with two smaller fish and has been trying to eat them ever since.”

Skelly is the most work we have ever put into a resident. He came off Folly Beach three days after the storm — waterlogged, cracked down one side, and there was a real question about whether we could bring him back at all.

He did not come alone. Two smaller fish came in with him, in perfect condition, having apparently spent the entire storm alongside a fish who has made his intentions toward them extremely clear. He has been trying to eat them for four months. He has not managed it. They do not appear concerned.

We will not separate them. We tried, briefly, and Skelly was worse for it — which tells you something about him that he would strongly prefer we hadn’t mentioned. All three go together, on the same wall, with a respectful gap. He’s not for everyone. He’s very much for someone.
