Intake: July 29, 2025

Found: Pismo Beach, California — wedged under the steps of a lifeguard tower, fully inflated.

Condition on arrival: Inflated. Sun-bleached on one side, packed with sand on the other. He has since come down considerably.

Temperament: Round, indignant, and firmly of the view that this could have happened to anybody.

Light: Bright. He sulks in dim rooms and you will know about it.

Attention: High. Bubba likes being looked at and does better in a room people actually use.

Good with children: Excellent. Genuinely his best quality.

Good with other residents: Yes, provided he is hung slightly higher than them.

Requirements: A busy wall — kitchen, playroom, hallway with traffic. Not a study. And please don’t feed him anything you found on a beach.

Hook: “He says it was something he ate.”

Bubba is a blowfish, and Bubba is with us because of a decision he made about something he found on the seabed at Pismo Beach. He will not say what it was.

Whatever it was disagreed with him profoundly. He inflated. And once a blowfish is fully inflated he stops being a swimmer and starts being a balloon — the tide brought him in and wedged him under the steps of a lifeguard tower, where he remained until a lifeguard heard him complaining about it. He has come down a good deal since. He maintains it was not his fault and we have chosen not to press him on the point.

He is warm, he is loud, and he is one of the most sociable residents we have ever taken in. He wants a busy room and a lot of eye contact — give him a kitchen and he will be the happiest fish we’ve ever placed. Just don’t hang him lower than anybody else. He’ll notice.
