Crab - NAMI
Intake: October 2, 2025
Found: Tybee Island, Georgia — sideways in the moat of a sandcastle.
Condition on arrival: Good. Sandy. Sideways. Furious.
Temperament: He is a crab and he is crabby. We have stopped presenting these as two separate facts.
Light: Bright.
Attention: Moderate to high, on his terms, announced in advance.
Good with children: Yes — the children who built that castle were sorry to see him go, which tells you he is nicer than he lets on.
Good with other residents: Yes, provided he is at the end of the row and nobody crowds him.
Requirements: Eye level. He dislikes being hung high and he has pincers and a temper, so we’d take that seriously.
Hook: “He is a crab. He is crabby. There is no more to it than that.”
Nami was found sideways in the moat of a sandcastle on Tybee Island, which a family had been defending for most of an afternoon. They were genuinely reluctant to hand him over. He was reluctant to be handed over. It was not a calm morning for anybody.
He is short-tempered, easily crowded, and entirely willing to use the pincers — we have the record to prove it, and so does one of our volunteers. Hang him at eye level, give him some room at the end of a wall, and don’t reorganise around him without warning.
And then, quietly, he is excellent. Those children were sorry to see him go for a reason.
