Bear - MATHIAS
Intake: May 22, 2026
Found: Point Reyes, California — below the lighthouse steps, a very long way from home.
Condition on arrival: Good. Weathered, in a way that suits him. Cold, which he did not seem to mind.
Temperament: Formal. Reserved. Rather old-fashioned, and we mean that kindly.
Light: Cool, even light. He is not a sunny-room resident and never has been.
Attention: Low.
Good with children: Yes. Gravely.
Good with other residents: Prefers a quiet neighbour. Has never once acknowledged the fish.
Requirements: A considered spot — hallway, study, above a desk. Somewhere serious.
Hook: “He is a polar bear. He was in California. We have no explanation.”
Mathias was below the lighthouse steps at Point Reyes, which is three hundred and eight steps down and three hundred and eight steps back up, carrying a bear.
He is a polar bear. He was on a beach in northern California. We have asked, in several different ways, and he has declined every time to explain himself. Our working theory is that he does not consider it anybody’s business, and on reflection we’ve decided he’s right.
