Found: Big Sur, California — at the bottom of a cliff path, with a baby.

Condition on arrival: Fair. A long way down, and it showed. The baby was fine. The baby had clearly been looked after.

Temperament: Striking, theatrical, entirely aware of the effect he has — and a completely devoted father, which he would rather you didn’t make a fuss about.

Light: Strong light. He’s built for it.

Attention: Moderate — he doesn’t need it, he simply enjoys it.

Good with children: Yes, obviously.

Good with other residents: He will dominate any wall he’s on. Plan accordingly.

Requirements: Adopted together, hung together. Wisp goes slightly below and to one side — that’s where he puts himself and we’ve stopped moving him.

Hook: “He came down that cliff with a baby and he came down it carefully.”

Specter was at the bottom of the cliff path at Big Sur, which is not a short walk in either direction and is considerably worse carrying a fish. He is the most theatrical resident we have and he knows precisely what he looks like.

He was not alone. His son came down with him — small, entirely unharmed, and visibly well looked after, which given the state Specter arrived in tells you exactly how that descent went. We call the little one Wisp. He does not go anywhere without his father and there has never been a moment’s question about that here.

They’re adopted together. Hang Wisp just below and slightly to one side — it’s where he puts himself, and after three months of moving him back we’ve conceded the point.

Wisp is our suggested name for the baby — change it if you’d rather, but change it now, before he’s introduced. Once it’s posted it’s permanent.
