Found: Cape Hatteras, North Carolina — stranded on a sandbar at low tide.

Condition on arrival: Poor. Sun-damaged along the back, badly worn, and completely out of options.

Temperament: Reformed, and serious about it. Steady, quiet, watchful in a way that used to mean something else.

Light: Any decent light. He isn’t precious about it any more.

Attention: Moderate.

Good with children: Yes — and he is careful with them in a way that is genuinely striking to watch.

Good with other residents: Yes. The smaller ones gave him a wide berth for about a week. They don’t now.

Requirements: Nothing in particular. We think he’s earned an easy wall.

Hook: “He spent his whole life frightening people. He’s spent this year making up for it.”

Kai is a hammerhead, and for most of his life that was the only thing anybody needed to know about him. Beaches emptied. People got out of the water. He had a reputation up and down that coast and, by every account we’ve heard, he had earned it.

We found him on a sandbar off Cape Hatteras at low tide, a hundred yards from open water, with the tide going out and nothing he could do about it. He was in a bad way. He let us pick him up, which we’re told he would not have done a year earlier.

Something changed while he was being put back together. He is quiet now, and careful, and unnervingly gentle with small children — he watches them the way you’d watch something you’d promised to look after. He is, improbably, the resident we now recommend to first-time adopters. Nobody is more surprised about that than us.
