Found: Cape May, New Jersey — inside a derelict crab trap.

Condition on arrival: Poor. Scraped along one side, wire marks, wet through, and astonished.

Temperament: Permanently amazed. Ratchet came up from very deep water and has not yet stopped being surprised by any of this.

Light: Warm light. Late afternoon suits him. Everything up here is brighter than he was expecting.

Attention: High for the first month, then he relaxes. Slightly.

Good with children: Yes — they are the only ones who match his energy.

Good with other residents: Yes. He finds all of them remarkable.

Requirements: Somewhere he can see the room. He does not like his back to it and, frankly, he’d miss too much.

Hook: “He came up from very deep water and he has not got over it.”

Ratchet came out of an abandoned crab trap at Cape May in genuinely poor shape — scraped down one side, wire marks, soaked through. He recovered quickly. The expression has not changed since.

He is a deep-water fish. Where he comes from there is no light, very little happening, and nothing whatsoever to look at. Then he arrived here, and there were ceilings, and lamps, and people walking past carrying things. The eyes are not an injury. That is simply his face now, and we don’t expect it to settle.

He is wonderful company for exactly this reason. Nothing is boring to Ratchet. Hang him where he can see the room — a kitchen, a hallway, anywhere with traffic — and he will spend the next forty years being delighted by a doorway.
