Fish - MAKO
Intake: May 11, 2026
Found: Half Moon Bay, California — zipped inside an abandoned surfboard bag.
Condition on arrival: Good. Every tooth intact, every fin intact, no dignity detected.
Temperament: Looks like a warning label. Is a comedian. There is no third layer.
Light: Bright. He plays to a room and he needs to be seen doing it.
Attention: High. Very high. Mako does not do well being ignored and has ways of addressing that.
Good with children: Excellent — children work him out in about four seconds, which is faster than most adults.
Good with other residents: Yes, enthusiastically, possibly excessively.
Requirements: A busy wall and a proper fixing. He is the only resident who has come off a wall twice, and on both occasions it was entirely his own doing.
Hook: “Every one of those teeth is real and not one of them has ever been used for anything.”
Somebody left a board bag at Half Moon Bay and Mako was zipped inside it. We have no idea how long. We have no idea how he got in. He won’t explain, and we’ve come to accept that this is simply the kind of thing that happens to Mako.
He looks alarming — the teeth are real, the fins are genuinely sharp, and people take a step back the first time they meet him. It lasts about four seconds. Underneath all that hardware he is the silliest resident in the building: a show-off, a nuisance, and the only fish here who has managed to fall off a wall twice through sheer enthusiasm.
He is not Blinker. Blinker is gentle. Mako is an idiot, and we say that with enormous affection. He wants a busy room, a bright wall, an audience, and a screw rated for considerably more than his actual weight.
