Found: Morro Bay, California — in the footwell of a beached kayak.

Condition on arrival: Fair. Faded on the exposed side.

Temperament: Warm, sunny, entirely without edge — except on one subject, which she will not discuss.

Light: Bright, warm light. She glows in afternoon sun and it’s worth planning for.

Attention: Moderate.

Good with children: Yes.

Good with other residents: Yes, easily. With one exception, and he is in this building.

Requirements: Afternoon sun if you have it — two hours maximum, she’s already faded once.

Hook: “She and Crystal have not spoken in years. Neither of them will say why.”

Goldie was in a kayak at Morro Bay that had clearly not been paddled in a long time. She is warm and kind and about as uncomplicated as they come, and she came to us six weeks before her brother did, from a beach three hundred miles up the same coast.

Crystal is her brother. They fell out years ago. Neither of them will tell us what about, both of them change the subject, and they have now spent over a year in the same building without once acknowledging each other.

Here is the thing we’ve worked out, from watching them: they both want it fixed. Neither of them knows how to start. Somebody is going to adopt one of them and that will be that — or somebody is going to take the pair, hang them on the same wall, and let them work it out. We would very much like it to be the second one.
